Arrowtown Frost.

Posted by mervfrench on July 18, 2010

A shot of the Arrowtown golf course on a – 5 deg morning.

Arrowtown is approx  12 k’s from Queenstown in NZ.  We stayed in Arrowtown for a couple of days last week as Queenstown is full to the brim with partying skiers this time of the year .  On the day we arrived it was minus 12 deg and the days are around  + 5 to 9 deg but surprisingly not as cold as you’d think. I really wanted to see  a 12deg frost as it almost looks like a snow fall the ice is packed so much around things.

This was shot as we went for an early morning walk and was taken with the little Canon S90 compact camera.  It’s a 2 image stitch and has had almost nil treatment , I don’t think it needs any , this is how it looked at the time.

By the way ,that pond on the left is frozen solid.

      Thanks Mark.

To say I’m impressed with the little S90 is an understatement.

I was a bit annoyed that I missed a cracking – 12 frost the morning we arrived and it was -13 the morning after we left. They say you can walk up to a tree and just snap off a branch it’s that frozen.

    Maaaattttte that is bloody MINT!!!!!

  3. Yup! What a nice fairy tale feel to this, frost does really lend itself well to images, gives it a nice otherworldly look! I have the S90 as well, great camera except I really hate it doesn’t do HD video with that great sensor it has.

      Thanks Flemming
HD vid would be nice , but I don’t use video much so doesn’t bother me. Just love the compactness and the quality images from this little ripper.

  4. Makes me shiver just looking at it! That blue cast really gives the feeling of a frosty morning. Almost looks like a painting.

  5. Woohah! Merv! Mate… this is totally awesome. Give up your day job mate!
    Cheers
    Dave

Oh man, that looks so cold, even the light is cold. Great shot, stitched from a couple of compact camera shots. Was it on a tripod?

Thanks Matt …. no it was hand held in landscape mode.

Gotta say I really like this myself , usually I’m a very hard self critic but i like the painterly look to this , and it’s all pretty well natural with minimal PS work , that’s what it looked like at the time. Lucky I guess.

It came out at over 150mb so it will print up ok.

      Thanks for the visit.

  12. Merv, you in the market for a slightly used slightly damaged Canon Powershot S90 for spare parts? I dropped mine yesterday, landed straight on lens and completely wrecked the lens. Will have to take it apart to see if I can rescue it. If not it’s for sale!

    IT’S A BARGAIN 😀 NOT EVEN DREAMING! 🙂

Maaaatee …. that’s a disaster, I feel for you, they are slippery little suckers though.

What could I salvage from the wreckage, probably bugger all …… take it straight to the pool room mate. 🙂
