Cold and Wet.

Posted by mervfrench on June 22, 2010

This is Riverton Beach at the bottom of the South Island of New Zealand.  I went out for a cruise early one morning to see what was around. I climbed up and over a small hill near the beach to have a look see and thought this might come up ok. It was cold wet and windy so I didn’t hang around, I set up , shot 7 images and ducked back to the car real quick as I wasn’t really dressed for this type of weather.

  1. The grass in the foreground certainly adds a lot of interest as well as the dark atmospheric cloud. You have created a brilliant moody image!

Merv, you’ve excelled yourself, this is one swish effort. I really like the sky and the highlights. Top notch.

  3. Very nice and moody Merv. Looks great. If anything I’d contemplate removing the fence posts as they detract a little.

    Thanks guys.

Funny how things change , I look at it this morning and i don’t like the purple tinge to the sky.

  5. Moody skies Merv. So what I’m learning from these shots is you get all this detail in an image from actually taking lots of shots and stitching them together. That right?

Hi Jo This image is a series of 7 portrait format shots taken side by side from left to right. The PTGUI software then stitches these together to form a panoramic image as you see above. Then the image has been tweaked in photoshop to get the moody look.

The detail comes from the right in camera focus , high resolution camera and sharpening the final image.

It certainly looks cold, good detail in the stitch.

  7. Sometimes we have to take those opportunities whether we’re prepared or not. The results can be amazing.

Hey Merv, like alot, the tones in the grass is appealing and the movement adds interest. The light on the foreshore is a nice focal point into the image. Here there is a little halo on the left side and a little purple in the sky but honestly its a well balanced dramatic landscape. captured well Merv Man!

For someone who didn’t like dark photos 12 months ago you are turning out some drama packed moody images, that sky looks great in those tones I think. You might be developing your own signature style ah. I’ll give it a yep anyway.
